And the Award for Coldest Day EVER Goes To…
…Today!
And yesterday!
Oh…wait for it…and tomorrow, too!
We have lived in this frigid freezer of a town for TEN YEARS now, and have not yet experienced cold to this degree (oh, LOL, what a super pun!)
It all started last Friday, when we woke up to this sight:
Pretty, innit? That there’s hoar frost, and it usually signifies some kind of change (for the worse) in the winter weather pattern. Seems it’s caused by moisture condensing out of the air due to newly-chillier temps.
Yeah. That’s right, chillier.
Fast-forward to Sunday evening…we’re packing up the car after a full day of skiing at Sunshine Village. All day the temperature has hovered around -10C. Pretty fine weather for skiing in, as a matter of fact. We start to notice, though, in the parking lot, that things feel a mite sharper, and a check of the car thermometer proves it. -14C. By the time we reached the highway it was -23C and we were pushing -30C by the time we arrived home. Brrrr!
So yesterday and today have been just about the coldest days I’ve ever experienced in my life. Monday morning, the outside temperature was -35C, which is bone-chilling enough on its own, but when you add a 50km/hr wind on top, it felt like -49C. You cannot even appreciate how cold that is! You breathe outside and automatically cough, for your lungs are forcefully expelling the frigid air from their moist warm depths. Stay outside long enough to walk to your car and your eyes begin to water, to prevent the eyeballs from freezing! Exposed skin will freeze in less than a minute.
This is no joking matter people! This weather is simply incompatible with life!

I’m in Cowtown as well and am SO tired of this weather! When is spring coming???
I’m with you Kath. I have lived in Calgary my whole life and I can only remember ONE other time when it was this cold and it was only for one day! What happened to the whole “Global Warming” thing? When does THAT happen??
I was born and raised in Saskatchewan and too remember frigid winters where it was nothing to have your school open and still be expected to go outside for recess!!! LOL
Now I’m an easterner and have lost that hardiness! And I actually long for consistent cold since we get so much up and down weather out here! Today alone we have had + temps, rain, snow – temps, freezing rain, extreme wind and a flash freeze!
Sorry, Kath – that’s winter in Western Canada! Having grown up in Saskatchewan, and living up north in Peace River for 5 years, I’ve seen it worse. For longer than 3 days. However, I am looking forward to not having to drive my kids to their bus stops so they don’t end up waiting outside. I am off to the craft store, to buy wool to make mittens to match my teenage daughter’s coat…..will likely be +30 by the time I get them done
