DEFINITELY Not a Boy…Right?

Ahhh, the joys of parenting.

Meet Girl1. Loves dinosaurs, reptiles, Harry Potter and skateboarding. A self-proclaimed tomboy.

Meet Girl2. Loves pink, princesses, pink, Hannah Montana, pink, makeup…oh, and did I mention pink? A self-proclaimed Tommy Girl (I think she thinks it means the opposite of tomboy. As for where she even heard the phrase, I have no idea.)

Recently, Girl2 cut her own hair, so we took her to the salon to have it fixed. While there, Girl1 asked for a haircut. I obliged. She wanted it short and layered. And it looks really, really cute.

Except.

Except that people keep thinking she’s a boy.

And although she’s happy (and likely a little bit proud) to be a tomboy, she does NOT want to be mistaken for a real boy. No way, no how. And I sooooo know how she feels. See, I was a tomboy when I was seven, too. Almost all my friends were boys (Rusty, Willy, Peter) and yes, I also had short hair. My dad used to pay me and my sisters to cut our hair short. Five bucks. That was a lot of money in 1976!

So, yeah, I’ve been mistaken for a boy myself, and I know how it stings. So I really understood where Girl1 was coming from when she asked me if she could dye her hair black (to match her dark eyebrows) and get extensions. I really did. But I wasn’t prepared to indulge that request, no matter how much my heart went out to her. In desperation, I bought her a $5 cleopatra-type black wig at the dollar store yesterday, advising her that it would under no circumstances be worn to school. She pranced around to a few local stores with it on and wore it for the rest of the evening at home, quite satisfied with her new look.

But I knew it wouldn’t last. When faced with the prospect of another short-haired day at school, she began to cry at bedtime. I was terribly mean for not letting her wear the wig to school (as an aside, how horrible would it have been had I let her wear the wig…gak!). Everyone teases her. She hates her hair, her eyebrows…she wants to take off her skin and get new skin so she will feel more comfortable (huh?)

And it hits me:

“If you don’t want people to say you look like a boy, why don’t you wear some of your skirts or dresses?”

“Ew! I hate skirts and dresses.”

Oh-kaaay…

INSPIRATION!

“If you don’t want people to say you look like a boy and you don’t like to wear skirts or dresses, why don’t we GET YOUR EARS PIERCED TOMORROW?”

pierced ear

And! She even let me buy her a skirt afterwards. Will wonders never cease?

LoriD, you’re right about the headbands. She is quite particular but we found a bunch at the dollar store that sort of look more like wearing a bandana on your head…kwim? And we bought about 4 of them. She’s wearing one this morning :)

I am welling up looking at her beautiful, proud little face. She is so unique and lovely! She’s starting to come into her own and figure out what she is all about. Big Girl Stuff :*)

Girl 1 was very proud to show me her newly pierced ears when I saw her at school this morning, and her hairband looks really cute as well. With those beautiful eyes, how could anyone who really looks at her mistake her for a boy?? (Not that boys can’t have wonderful eyes – mine does, but there is a difference!)

Aww… she looks adorable! Good call on the earrings. Do you think she would wear a hairband? A little girl I know has always had really short hair, but she has a bunch of hairbands that look really cute!
