All right, I know how stupid the facebook create-a-quiz widgets are. Most of them are written by people who really shouldn’t list English fluency on their resumes. (Really – the questions and results could be posted on the engrish website.) But when I took the “what type of woman are you” quiz, I was AMAZED at the results. Apart from being a “Lovely Lady”, here’s what it said: Read the rest of this entry »

We love Phil!
The Amazing Race is, hands-down, my favourite reality show ever. And yes, part of it is due to Phil Keoghan (love him), but that’s not all. The premise is clever: use your wits to follow clues and travel around the world faster than the other teams. I like contests that rely more on wits than looks or physical strength. Not to say that looks and physical strength don’t factor in TAR, they do; but you simply can’t rely on them entirely (as you can in Survivor, for instance).
So I’ve always enjoyed the show, but I’ve never enjoyed the contestants as much as I have this season. Usually by this point in the game, there are some teams that I just hate. Some teams are underhanded, using the excuse “it’s part of the game” or “we’re playing for a million dollars” to justify things like stealing taxis or telling travel agents to lie to their opponents. Other teams are just embarrassingly painful to watch. These fall into three general categories: Read the rest of this entry »

I guess reality TV jumped the shark the second it began, really, didn’t it? It has always appealed to our basest instincts – watching people snark about each other, witnessing fights, artificially engineering unbelievable situations and calling them reality? I mean, who watches this stuff? Oh. Me. Yeah, I do, don’t I?
But anyway. I still love it. Or, rather, most of it. You see, I see myself as a bit of a reality TV snob. I like good reality TV: Survivor. Amazing Race. So You Think You Can Dance. Idol. Biggest Loser. ANTM. There are lots of them, these higher-quality reality shows.
And then: there’s Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend.

Guess who was a parent volunteer on the Kindergarten field trip today?
So I go with Girl2 and her class to this place called SpacePort at the Calgary International Airport. And they do a little interactive stageshow called Living in Space. Of course the best part for the kids is how to pee and poo in space. So the teacher is explaining why it’s important to have these vacuum hoses in the toilet (my new fave phrase: “urine adapter funnel”), she says, “Imagine what would happen in microgravity, if all your number two didn’t make it into the toilet…”
And that’s when it happened, one little boy yelled out in this crystal-clear piping voice,
Wow, I never heard of flying poo before!
Like I said, quote of the day.

Just so you know. Never, never, ever buy your child a “Grow Your Own Triops Kit”. They’re available from Scholastic, only in the catalogue, they call it “prehistoric creatures”. That’s so you can’t go online and google “triops” before you buy the kit.
Because when you get the kit? And you hatch the eggs?

I know! Can we say 'disgusting', children?
