So You Think You Can Mess With My Favourite TV Show?

Humph.

I’m miffed at the producers of So You Think You Can Dance. Mighty miffed. First, they changed the set, and suddenly what felt like an intimate performance now feels like the telecast for the academy awards. And they also changed the judging. And it just doesn’t feel like my familiar fave show anymore. Sadness. Read the rest of this entry »

SYTYCD Auditions Week 2

First of all – my absolute fave choreographer-turned-judge made an appearance on the audition panel for Episode 2 (Miami/Memphis): can we say “I love Lil’ C?” Honestly, who else could get away with wearing a dress shirt and tie underneath a hoodie? NOBODY, that’s who.

So, who do I think you should keep an eye on this time? Well, definitely contemporary dancing sisters Megan and Caitlyn Kinney – Megan auditioned in Miami and won a ticket straight to Vegas, and her sister Caitlyn hoped to join her following her audition in Memphis. Read the rest of this entry »

So You Think You Can Get the Kids to Bed on Time?

May 22nd, 2009 Posted in So You Think You Can Dance, entertainment, reality TV | no comment »

Well, it’s here again folks, my favourite time of TV.

Yes, that’s right: the show that will make you feel like you can actually dance (and, not incidentally fills adult classes at dance studios across North America) is back. Season Five of So You Think You Can Dance has begun (yay!) and although I have the PVR set to capture the entire season in glorious HD, there is still something magical about watching it in real broadcast, commercials and all. For that reason, I rushed like mad last night to get my gals to bed in time to join Cat, Nigel, Mary, Tabitha & Napoleon and Sonya as they sat in judgement while some very-, somewhat- and completely un-talented dancers auditioned for their ticket to Vegas in the first big step in this most fabulous of reality shows.

Today I’m double-posting: almost the exact same content here and over on my other blog Losing It! on urbanmoms.ca. I won’t normally be posting about SYTYCD on my urbanmoms blog – I’ll stick to my usual eclecta there, and I’ll focus on SYTYCD opinion here on thisiskat (and heck, I’ll probably throw in some Canada’s Next Top Model dish, too seeing as it starts on Tuesday). OMIGOD! I Laughed. I Cried. JOSHUA WON! And I Saw Will Dance Again!

So I had two personal epiphanies during last night’s So You Think You Can Dance finale show.

NUMBER ONE:
I am going to be a sad, bored and lonely person until the next incarnation of SYTYCD airs. I just feel – somehow – like I have really gotten to know these people and I will miss them. Pathetic, I know.

NUMBER TWO:
I am old. The Jonas Brothers? Who CARES? My kids would care, but they are well abed by the time this show airs (from 9:00 – 11:00 here). That was the first time I actually saw them perform and all I can say is…blah. Pretty typical of the ‘tween sensations (à la Hannah Montana) but not worthy of a show like SYTYCD.

But now to the show: I actually clapped out loud after two of the numbers! Yes, that’s right, crazy old lady alone in her living room clapping at the TV…right here! And both times I was moved to applause by Nigel – his choreography in 5 Guys Named Moe and his DANCING with the kids from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy to Boogie Wonderland:

It’s Official: I am in Love with Cat Deeley

When I first saw her (you have to know, this is my first season watching SYTYCD) I thought, “okay, here we go again…tall, pretty, skinny host, I hate her already.”

But. But. Over the weeks, she has really grown on me. I don’t know whether it’s her genuine feelings for the dancers, or her little irreverent quips to Nigel Lythgoe, or the fact that she is most definitely not incredibly well-endowed in the boobage department and yet hasn’t succumbed to the HooterwoodHollywood pressure to enhance what mother nature has naturally given her. Actually, that’s one of the great things about this show – the complete lack of fake boobs anywhere. So refreshing!

But back to Cat. Tonight she topped it all when she wore Twitch’s glasses and then, at Nigel’s goading, wore his fake teeth “spit and all”. When she struck this pose it hit me:

"I'm all glamour, I am"

"I'm all glamour, I am"

She has a common touch. She is — unlike so many Hollywood types — able to dress herself down and laugh at herself. And I like that.

Enough that I can even forgive her for those SHOES!
