What I MIGHT Name Another Child. If I Had One. Which I Won’t. But Anyway…

Yup....me at 7 months (only!) with Girl2

7 mo. (only!) with Girl2

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post: What I DIDN’T Name My Children, I thought I’d give you a little list of what names would top the list if Hubster and I were to have another child. Which we won’t. (Hopefully). But anyway. Here you go:

NB – the list is heavily weighted towards girls’ names, and I think that’s because we so love the boy’s name that we picked out and never got to use that it would be a no-brainer. But really, we would have to be prepared for another girl, because hello: we’re batting two-for-two here. But it’s all moot anyway, since we’re not planning on another child. I know, shut up already, right?

GIRLS

Lucy:
I just sooooo love this name. It’s sweet, feminine, classic and NOT hard to spell, as evidently Girl2’s name is, despite the fact that I can name about 5 famous women with the same name, and there are islands and towns and a whole region in France with the same name. ALL. SPELLED. THE. SAME. WAY. It’s like this…imagine your child’s name was Carolyn. And everyone insisted on spelling it Caroline. It’s not even the same name, is it? One is Carol-lynn, and the other is Carol-line. It’s the same with Girl2’s name. And it drives me crazy. But anyway. I like the name Lucy. Plus, it means “light”, which is really nice. What I DIDN’T Name My Children

what's my name?

what's my name?

Okay, so I’m back in blogland now, which means I’ve been surfing all my fave blogs and reading back in their archives to see what I missed. And one of the best entries I read in my catch-up was this one, on LoriD’s blog Not the Mother of the Year. In it she tells us some of the baby names that topped the list for her and her hubby during her three pregnancies, but still didn’t make the final cut.

I just loved reading the names and the stories behind them, and it got me all nostalgic thinking about the little babies I named but then never had…the names I loved as a teenager and in my twenties, the names my hubster and I talked about before I ever got pregnant, and then the names that were shortlisted while we were expecting our two girls, but never made it to real life (two that are very special because they were chosen for the son we never had). The Juno Effect

Juno

I bought a previously viewed copy of Juno a few weeks ago. I just happened to be in the video store with Girl1 & Girl2, and was buying them a previously viewed copy of The Water Horse. It was $14.99 or, the guy informed me, I could have two movies for $20, so why didn’t I just grab Alvin and the Chipmunks while I was at it? Well, of course I wouldn’t buy Alvin and the Chipmunks. Ewww! But I did spy Juno and jumped at the chance to own this wizard film that I had loved so much in the theatre.

The problem is, Girl1 was there, and seeing me buy it renewed her erstwhile fascination with this movie. Okay, two things. One, during Juno’s theatrical release, Girl1 was agog with curiosity about a girl who got pregnant. She kept asking if she could go to the movie, but I told her it was for grownups. Two, it’s not really a problem that she’s interested in it. I thought it was a totally fab movie and I wouldn’t have problems with an adolescent daughter seeing it. But I do think it’s a bit much for a seven year old. Read the rest of this entry »

Our Earth Hour

Earth Hour

Did you even hear about this? I only found out by accident yesterday when researching dishwashers on the Sears website and saw a link to the Earth Hour page on the WWF website. I clicked through and found out about this amazing event – turning off the lights from 8-9 pm on Saturday and taking a stand against climate change.

The event was pioneered in Sydney, Australia last year, and went worldwide this year. Read the rest of this entry »

The Urge

breastfeedingI’ve had it bad. For weeks now. And it’s all Laura’s fault.

She had to say, “hey, I’ve never seen your birth videos…”

So we watched them. And before you get all “ewww, you taped the births of your children?” let me defend myself. I am was a major birth junkie. I’d never seen an actual birth, and I knew I wasn’t going to get to see the most important ones: the ones starring me. So yes, I did tape them, and no I don’t regret it. They have brought me hours and hours of enjoyment, pride, healing and nostalgia. I treasure my birth videos (but not to the point of posting them on YouTube). Read the rest of this entry »
