Hello. My Name is Inigo Montoya

Jul 29th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | 4 comments »

Well, okay, clearly my name is not Inigo Montoya. No, this is a fragment of a line from one of my favourite books/movies of. all. time: The Princess Bride; book and screenplay both by William Goldman. Which probably explains why this is simply the best movie adaptation of a novel I’ve ever seen. (I mean, of course, that having the novel’s author write the screenplay usually leads to a better film adaptation.)

And that line, that one line, has stuck with me since I first read the book way back in, oh, 1983 or so:

“Hello. My Name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

An Abundance of Luck

First of all, let me offer each of you my sincerest apologies for my long and inexcusable absence. You know how it is when life just bears down on you with such intensity and weight that you simply cannot stir yourself to do anything beyond the absolute necessities?

Yes. Well, that was me. I knew I should have been updating This Is Kat. I had a million ideas. I had zero will.

But…that is past, and I am back. MOVING ON, THEN.

A lot has happened in the months since my idyllic, incredible (did it really actually happen, in real life?) vacation in England. My once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

Uhhh…make that twice-in-a-lifetime. Oh, actually, thrice-in-a-lifetime. Read the rest of this entry »

Why Am I Not Asleep?

Apr 2nd, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized, family, humour, the girls | 3 comments »

I did call my husband at 9:30 to say I was feeling a cold coming on and was going to go straight to bed, not even washing the dishes (did I mention my dishwasher broke over a week ago and I won’t get my new one until at least April 10th???).

And then I opened my email. And went on the internet. And laughed myself silly in that all-knowing, superior, “well, you’ve finally joined us, have you?” way about my sister and her new iMac.

And I had just been thinking, “I need to write something new in my blog, but WHAT???” when I saw the pictures of her and her kids with the hilarious Photo Booth tool on her new Mac. And it reminded me of way back when my MacBook was all new and shiny (and still white; not grungy with finger slime). My kids and I took a fair few funny shots with the distortion filters, and I thought I’d post some of the winners here for your comedic enjoyment. Read the rest of this entry »

Our Earth Hour

Earth Hour

Did you even hear about this? I only found out by accident yesterday when researching dishwashers on the Sears website and saw a link to the Earth Hour page on the WWF website. I clicked through and found out about this amazing event – turning off the lights from 8-9 pm on Saturday and taking a stand against climate change.

The event was pioneered in Sydney, Australia last year, and went worldwide this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Oh, Darn. I Licked It. A Lot.

GIRL2: Mommy, I can’t get my cast wet, right?

ME: That’s right.

GIRL2: What will happen if I do?

ME: (thinking of a good excuse to keep her from dripping juice all over her cast) Well, it might get wet inside and get really itchy.

GIRL2: That’s okay, I can handle itchy.

ME: (time to up the ante) Well, it might also get infected!

GIRL2: Oh, darn. I licked it. A lot…

She licked it???
